NUC 2000 Workshops
Meet new people and learn some new unicycling skills during the workshops at NUC 2000.
So far the following workshops are planned:
If you want to run a workshop at NUC 2000, please contact Dottie Sogoian.
Giraffe and Big Wheel Freemounting - presented by John Foss
Anyone can freemount. Bring your giraffe, big wheel, or other unicycle
you're having trouble freemounting for this hands-on workshop. John Foss
will explain the basics, and provide individualized instruction as you work
on your techniques. The proper way to dismount (falling safely), how to
gauge failed mounts, and lots of tricks and fancy variations will be
covered.
John Foss learned to freemount his Schwinn Giraffe a few months after
learning to ride. In 1981 he was the men's winner in a giraffe freemounting
contest held at the Redford Mini Meet, and still holds the known world
record at 130 consecutive mounts onto a six footer. He has also been riding
big wheels (and about everything else) since 1982.
Mountain Unicycling Fun and Techniques presented by John Foss
Bring your unicycle, your helmet, and your other safety equipment for a
hands-on workshop in the fast-growing area of MUni. Unicycles can be ridden
over almost any terrain, And you don't need a specialized unicycle to get
started. You also don't need mountains. John will show you how to handle
obstacles, hills, drops, and whatever can be found in the workshop area.
There will also be a discussion of equipment, clothing, and what to bring on
a ride.
John Foss has been riding off-road since he learned to unicycle his unpaved
street during his first month of riding. He took to trails not long after
that. In 1996 he hosted the first-ever off-road unicycle convention, the
California MUni Weekend. The sport of MUni has swiftly grown in popularity
since then.
Level Testing and Training in Level Testers presented by Andy Cotter
Learn how to be level tested and then be tested for the levels that you have been working on.
Also, Andy will qualify other people to become level testers so they can go and test people in their clubs.
Learning to Ride - A workshop for relatives and strangers presented by Dave Matthews
This workshop is for all ages, from highly motivated four year olds to
adventerous seventy-five year olds. In between is a lot easier.
Bring a unicycle and a helper, or just bring your curiosity. (The latter is
dangerous. That's how I got hooked.)
Don't expect to learn to ride in only an hour, but you will take away an
understanding of the easiest way to go about learning. A hand-out will help
you plot your strategy, and even help you teach others to ride.
